What "Good Enough" Code Looks Like on a Real Team

Code quality is one of those things that feels like it should have a clear standard, and never quite does. In school or during bootcamp, the bar is usually "does it work and is the logic correct." On a real team, the bar is higher, more contextual, and harder to read from the outside.
Most junior engineers land somewhere they shouldn't be. They either try to write the most elegant, thorough, abstract solution possible (over-engineering), or they ship the first thing that passes the tests without asking whether it's maintainable (under-engineering). Both approaches frustrate senior teammates, for different reasons.

Why "Does It Work?" Is Not the Bar
The first instinct when shipping code is to verify that it does what it's supposed to do. That's necessary, but it's the floor, not the ceiling.
Code you write today will be read, modified, and debugged by other people for months or years. If your code works but nobody can understand it, the team incurs a cost every time someone has to decipher it. If your code works but has no tests for the important paths, the next engineer to touch it doesn't know what they can safely change. If your code works but introduces a pattern that's inconsistent with the rest of the codebase, the inconsistency will spread as people copy-paste from your example.
The question isn't "does this code work?" The question is "can this code be maintained by someone who wasn't here when I wrote it?"
That reframe is what separates junior from professional code quality standards.
The Four Attributes of Good Enough
On most teams, "good enough" code has four properties. The weight of each one varies by context, but all four matter.
Readable by your teammates. Someone who is familiar with the codebase should be able to read your code and understand what it does and why. This doesn't mean verbose comments on every line. It means variable names that say what the thing is, functions that do one thing and are named for what they do, and logic that flows in a way that isn't surprising.
The test for readability: read your code three days after you wrote it, without looking at the ticket. Does it still make sense? If not, it probably needs more clarity.
Tested appropriately for the risk level. This is contextual. A critical payment flow needs thorough test coverage, including edge cases and failure modes. A CSS tweak to a button color does not need unit tests. The question is: if this code breaks in production, what's the blast radius, and have you written tests that would catch that break before it reaches users?
Most engineers undertest their code. The right amount of testing is enough that you feel confident shipping, and that a future engineer modifying this code would feel confident that the tests would catch regressions.
Doesn't introduce new technical debt. There's always existing technical debt. Every codebase has areas that are messy or outdated or inconsistent. That's not your fault. What you can control is whether the code you add makes the overall state better, neutral, or worse.
If you're fixing a bug in a file that uses one pattern, follow that pattern even if you'd do it differently from scratch. If you're adding a feature to a module that has a certain structure, add it in a way that's consistent. Don't introduce a new abstraction unless the ticket calls for it and you've discussed it with a teammate.
Follows team conventions. Every team has conventions: naming patterns, file organization, how tests are structured, how migrations are written, how API responses are formatted. These aren't always documented. They live in the code itself.
When you violate a convention without knowing it's a convention, it shows up as a code review comment. When you consistently follow conventions, your PRs move faster and generate less friction.
How to Calibrate to Your Team's Standard
The fastest way to learn what your team's bar is: read recently merged PRs.
Not the open ones that haven't been reviewed yet. The merged ones, especially the ones that went through without much back-and-forth. Those represent what the team considers acceptable to ship.
Look at:
- How they handle errors (do they return specific error messages or generic ones?)
- How they name things (what are the conventions for variables, methods, and files?)
- How much test coverage they add for typical changes
- How they write PR descriptions (a sentence? a paragraph? with links to tickets?)
- What the commit message style looks like
You can also look at PRs that generated a lot of comments. What did reviewers push back on? That tells you what falls below the bar.
Doing this reading before you submit your first few PRs is one of the highest-value things you can do in your first month. It takes an afternoon and will save you many rounds of "please clean this up" feedback.
Feature PRs vs. Hotfixes
The quality bar for a given PR is also shaped by what the PR is doing.
A feature PR adds new capability to the product. It will be read in code review, potentially for a while. It will be the starting point for future work in that area. It should be held to the team's full quality standard: readable, tested, consistent, no new debt.
A hotfix addresses something that's broken in production right now. The calculus is different. Speed matters. You still need to be correct (a broken hotfix is worse than the original bug), but you might ship with less polish and plan to follow up with a cleanup PR. Some teams have explicit conventions for this: a comment like # TODO: clean up after incident response or a ticket created for the follow-up.
An exploratory or draft PR to get early feedback isn't expected to be polished. Say so in the description: "This is an early draft to get your thoughts on the approach before I finish the implementation." This sets the right expectation and prevents reviewers from spending time on nits when the structure might change.
Knowing which type of PR you're writing and signaling that clearly in your description will improve your code review experience significantly.
Over-Engineering: What It Is and Why It Happens
Over-engineering is writing more code than the problem requires. Abstract base classes for something that has one implementation. Configuration systems for options that will never change. Generalized utilities for logic that appears once.
Junior engineers over-engineer for understandable reasons. They want to show technical depth. They've read about design patterns and clean code and want to demonstrate they know them. They worry that a simple solution looks naive.
The problem is that extra complexity costs everyone. It's more to read, more to test, more to understand when debugging, and more to change when requirements shift. The senior engineers reviewing your code usually aren't impressed by complexity. They're often frustrated by it, because they've learned that simple solutions age better.
The mental check: "Is this complexity solving a problem I actually have, or a problem I imagine might exist someday?" If the answer is the latter, simplify.
Under-Engineering: What It Is and Why It Happens
Under-engineering is shipping code that works but creates problems for whoever touches it next.
No tests because the manual check passed. Variable names like data, result, or temp. Error cases that are swallowed silently. Hardcoded values with no explanation. Logic that works but only the person who wrote it would understand why.
Junior engineers under-engineer for different but also understandable reasons. They're moving fast and don't want to look slow. They're not sure how much testing is expected. They haven't had to debug someone else's poorly written code yet, so they don't feel the cost of it viscerally.
The cost of under-engineered code is paid by future engineers, including future you. And on a team where you're already proving yourself, the cost is also paid in code review feedback, reputation, and trust.
When to Ask "Is This Good Enough?"
There will be moments when you're genuinely unsure whether your code meets the bar. That's normal, especially in your first few months. The right move is to ask.
The best way to ask is in the PR itself, not in a separate message. At the bottom of your PR description, add: "I'd particularly appreciate feedback on [the error handling here / how I structured the tests / whether this approach makes sense for the scale we're at]."
This signals that you've thought about the quality of your work, not just the functionality. It tells the reviewer where to focus. And it shows that you're open to feedback, which is the right posture.
You can also ask before submitting a PR. If you've done something in a way you're not sure about, ping a teammate: "I'm about to open a PR for ticket X. I'm a bit uncertain about how I handled Y. Want to take a quick look before I open it?" A 10-minute conversation before the PR is often faster than two rounds of review after.
The Relationship Between Quality and Speed
One common fear for junior engineers is that meeting a high quality standard will make them slow. This is partially true in the short term and mostly false over time.
Writing tests takes time. Good names take thought. Thinking about edge cases adds minutes to writing a function. These things slow you down at first.
But they also prevent the debugging sessions, the regression bugs, the code review rounds, and the "can you help me understand what this code is doing" conversations that consume far more time later. Engineers who write clean, tested code tend to be faster over a quarter, not slower, because they're not paying the cleanup tax constantly.
Good commit hygiene is part of this too. Clear commits make your PRs easier to review, easier to revert if needed, and easier for future engineers to understand when reading history.
The standard to hold yourself to: write code you'd be happy to explain, test, and be associated with six months from now. That standard, applied consistently, gets you to good enough.
Learning to Read the Room
"Good enough" is a team-specific concept that you calibrate over time. Your first few PRs will teach you a lot about where your team's actual bar is, often through the feedback you receive.
Pay attention to code review patterns. If you consistently get feedback about the same thing (tests, naming, structure), that's a signal about where your defaults are misaligned with the team's expectations.
